Despite decades of research and progress, Personality Disorders remain the most enigmatic area of clinical work for psycotherapists. Most attention to personality disorders in the curent clinical literature is devoted to Narchissistic and Borderline states, and tends to focus on therapy approaches and techinques which are particular to these clinical problems. This other areas of personality and characteri psychopathology relatively neglected. In this 3 hour workshop, Dr. Klafter will review the diagnosis and treatment of Obsesive Compulsive, Avoidant, Histrionic, Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypical, and Antisocial Personality Disorders. He will focus on the common, expected challenges clinicians face with these disordes, as well as the most typical problems that these patients face in negotiating their personal lives. Treatment strategies will include behavioral, cognitive, and psychodynamic techniques, and will also include common comorbidities in this group of challenging patients. Specific cultural factors that clincians working in Orthodox Jewish Communities need to be aware of will be considered as well.

About the Presenter

Dr. Klafter is a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist for adults and adolescents. He teaches psychotherapy and psychoanalysis at the University of Cincinnati Residency Training Program and the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute. He is also licensed to practice in New York and services as the Senior Psychiatric Consultat for the Ezras Choilim Health Center in Kiryas Joel, Monroe, NY.
