My perspective of therapy mirrors the following excerpt from Alice Miller’s book, The Drama of the Gifted Child.
“The true opposite of depression is neither gaiety nor absence of pain, but vitality—the freedom to experience spontaneous feelings. It is part of the kaleidoscope of life that these feelings are not only happy, beautiful, or good but can reflect the entire range of human experience, including envy, jealousy, rage, disgust, greed, despair, and grief.”
My goal as a therapist is to help the client to explore, process and experience the full scope of his or her emotions. The safe therapeutic environment can create holding space to both process painful experiences and deepen insight into one’s thoughts and feelings. Through understanding one’s emotions and unconscious processes, the client will gain insight and self-awareness, integrating the “here and now” with the “there and then”, becoming more cohesive and integrated, more authentic and vital.
Using a blend of different perspectives with empathy and understanding, I aim to foster a supportive therapeutic relationship, which allows the client the freedom and safety to understand the past, gain insight into the present and integrate it with pragmatic focus on future goals and relationships.
For the past eight years, I have been working as a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor in various settings. I graduated with a Bachelors in Psychology and a Masters in Social Work from Touro College.
