The Highs and Lows of Weed: Understanding and Treating Compulsive Marijuana Usage

The current workshop will explore the impact of the new reality of the legalization of cannabis in many states across the USA on the field of mental health. It will discuss the rise of usage among young adults and teens and its wide-ranging effects on individuals. Different methods for treatment for compulsive use, as well as effects on relationships, will be explored, as well.

Binyamin Tepfer Ph.D., CSAT, CMAT is the founding director of Arbor Intensives, an integrative IOP in Brooklyn, NY, specializing in treating trauma, behavioral health, and emotional wellness. He also serves as a supervisor for the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals while maintaining a private practice in Cedarhurst, Brooklyn, and Lakewood.

Rachel Slochowsky is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, and a Certified Partner Trauma Therapist. She works at Tepfer and Associates, a group practice in Brooklyn and Cedarhurst and Arbor Intensives. Rachel specializes in working with couples, betrayal trauma, and intimacy. Rachel has given lectures and trainings on marriage and healing from betrayal trauma.


  • Participants will define the overt and covert effects of marijuana on the brain and mind.
  • Participants will explain the crucial components needed for recovering from addictive use.
  • Participants will summarize the harmful impact and stages of repair for overwhelmed and confused parents and partners.

30 min- Listing the effects of cannabis on the various parts of the brain

15 min- Approaches to recovery when usage becomes compulsive
