The Therapeutic Alliance: Building Trust with Clients and Families

Studies show a strong correlation between the therapeutic alliance and positive client outcomes (Cameron et al., 2018; Sylvestre & Gobeil, 2020). Essential techniques for building rapport and trust include empathetic communication and reflective responding (Taylor, 2020; Harris & Panozzo, 2019). Additionally, engaging families in the therapeutic process has been shown to enhance client success (Skundberg-Kletthagen et al., 2020).

This course educates participants on the value of the therapeutic alliance in both individual and family work, while teaching effective communication skills to foster trust and rapport with clients and their families. Participants will learn techniques to engage family systems in therapy to improve treatment outcomes and gain tools to navigate challenging dynamics and build collaborative therapeutic relationships.

 

About the Presenter

Elizabeth "Liz" Bullard, LPC, is the founder of Ebullard Counseling Inc. She specializes in a collaborative, strengths- based approach that builds strong therapeutic connections with clients, participants, and communities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will identify key components of effective therapeutic communication with clients and families.
  2. Participants will demonstrate strategies to engage family members constructively during therapy sessions.
  3. Participants will describe methods to manage conflict and build alliance in family-centered care.
  4. Participants will explain how strong therapeutic connections contribute to improved client outcomes.

10 minutes Introduction

15 minutes Building rapport and explaining the course rationale

15 minutes Data supporting how strong therapeutic connections improve client outcomes

20 minutes Exploring components of effective therapeutic communication (active listening, CBT strategies, empathy)

10 minutes Discussion on recognizing when the therapeutic alliance enhanced therapeutic skills or client reception

20 minutes Strategies to engage family members in treatment (future planning, improving family interactions, recognizing maladaptive behavior patterns)

20 minutes Barriers to engaging clients and families and strategies to overcome them (addressing ruptures, avoiding over-eagerness)

10 minutes Discussion on barriers clinicians are currently facing and applying tools to build connection

10 minutes Summary and final questions
