Understanding and Addressing Bullying: A Practical Guide for Clinicians

Bullying is a complex issue and although portrayed extensively in popular books and other media, many myths about bullying persist.  Clinicians require knowledge of the nature and outcomes of bullying in order to best address such issues in their practice.  This webinar will address common characteristics of bullies and victims, therapeutic measures appropriate for both, as well as interventions for schools and other social settings.

About the Presenter

Dr. Rona Novick is a clinical psychologist, Dean Emeritus of the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education, Co-educational director of Hidden Sparks, and the founding director of the School Mental Health Alliance at Long Island Jewish Medical Center where she developed the BRAVE bully prevention program.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will demonstrate knowledge of definition of bullying as compared with other aggression
  2. Participants will identify mental health consequences of bullying for victims, bullies and bystanders.
  3. Participants will summarize interventions for bullying that can be integrated into clinical practice.

Agenda:

Introduction - 5 minutes

Definition and phenomenology - 10 minutes(including differentiating from other forms of aggression and common characteristics of bullies and victims)

The role of bystanders - 10 minutes  (including both peer and adult bystanders)

Treatment of victims - 20 minutes (including social skills training, anxiety reduction, self-regulation, in-vivo support)

Treatment of bullies - 10 minutes (self-regulation, empathy building, consequences)

Impact of social media - 10 minutes (including guidelines for parents/schools)

School-wide and communal approaches - 15 minutes (including clinician's roles in consulting/supporting such efforts, pro-active and reactive strategies).

Summary and questions - 10 minutes
