When Families Lock Horns Around Aging

Wednesday, July 15th, 2026   4:15 PM EDT -5:45 PM EDT
Adina Segal, LCSW and Shira Felberbaum Kedem, LMSW, MS,
$29.99 USD Cost For Member: $0

Disagreements that arise in families often increase as issues around aging emerge.  A parent or spouse may resist accepting medical or physical care. There are often disagreements among relatives whether an elder has problems with their memory or impaired judgment. Clients will often reach out to therapists for assistance on how to manage these often serious challenges.

This workshop will familiarize clinicians of any level on common issues related to caregiving and aging. We will be discussing ways to support caregivers and navigate some of these disagreements.

About the Presenter

Adina Segal, LCSW, is a Senior Navigator and Community Builder at CaringKind, where she provides emotional support to individuals and families affected by dementia, with a particular focus on bringing services and awareness to the Jewish community. Adina is passionate about working with individuals and families impacted by issues related to illness and aging and has been working with this population for the past fifteen years in different capacities. Previously she was the Caregiver Program Director at Heights and Hills and has held positions at the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services and Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services. Adina holds a B.A. in Psychology from CUNY Queens College and an MSW from NYU School of Social Work. Shira Felberbaum Kedem, LMSW, MS provides support to active and former (bereaved) dementia caregivers and to those living with dementia, especially to those in the Jewish community and/or in residential settings. As a licensed social worker at CaringKind, she strives to prevent caregiver burnout, reduce stigmatization, foster a sense of connection, and cultivate or strengthen innovative partnerships to meet existing and emerging needs in the field. Shira facilitates emotionally and/or educationally focused support groups, delivers related educational seminars, provides consultations to individuals and families learning to live with dementia, cultivates partnerships in the Jewish community to help build dementia-friendly communities, and trains senior living community memory care teams. Shira serves on the Board of the Uptown Interagency Council on Aging, where she is active on the Program Planning Committee. Shira has consulted independently and also worked briefly for OHEL overseeing multiple departments. Previously at The Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services, Shira was embedded in six NYC-based congregations as a synagogue consultant, where she engaged clergy, lay leaders, and congregants on how to make the communities more welcoming and responsive to their constituents. Prior to this, Shira spent a decade at MetLife in the for-profit, financial services industry engaged in program / project management across multiple disciplines. She is a graduate of the UJA-based Ruskay Jewish Professional Leadership Institute. From NYU, she holds both a gerontology-focused MSW and a change management / leadership development-focused MS in Strategic Human Resource Management and Development.
